Straightened Out - Post Op Follow Up

January 5th, 2015

My post op follow up for my surgery went as well as any appointment could go. I got to see my scope pics and had new x-rays taken. Dr. Z said not very many people say they are nearly painless in the hip/femur area after this surgery but isn't surprised to hear how painful I find the tibia to be. On the scope front, he showed me the chunk of cartilage he took out (the floater) that was likely the culprit of my getting stuck on the toilet at work. I also had a piece of labral flap removed. There was also a femoral chondral defect that he would have liked to microfracture but it was inaccessable without opening the hip so he debrided it instead. He compared it to a pothole on the road being small enough that if you drove over it you probably wouldn't feel it under your tires. Love the analogy! So this hip is way healthier than the right hip for sure. He's happy with the turn out of both hips post PAO but obviously the right hip isn't in the best condition.
On the femoral/tibial derotation front I'm to stay toe touch weight bearing and in the boot for protection 24/7 (except showers which I can do gentle ROM) until I come back in a month to see more x-rays and determine if there has been any bone growth. I didn't ask about hardware removal just yet. I'll wait until a different appointment as this one seemed like it was packed with so much other stuff and new information as the office recently upgraded their computer system for patient access portals, which are nice but time consuming in the beginning.
We both made our little jokes about how nice a job he did with making my leg look so pretty and straight though, always time for kidding around :)
The first four xrays are from my post op appointment yesterday on my left leg. The last picture is one I put together to demonstrate the difference between my right and left tibial derotations done by two different surgeons. Interesting view.
